Do’s and Don’ts of Visiting Cape Town

Cape Town is a welcoming city filled with history, culture, and natural beauty. Like any major destination, it helps to know the local do’s and don’ts to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Do’s

  • Do use local guides: Whether visiting townships or hiking trails, going with an experienced guide adds safety and context.
  • Do drink the tap water: Cape Town’s tap water is safe, clean, and reduces the need for plastic bottles.
  • Do wear comfortable shoes: From exploring the V&A Waterfront to climbing Table Mountain, you’ll be doing plenty of walking.
  • Do respect the culture: Cape Town is diverse and inclusive. Embrace local traditions and be mindful when taking photos in cultural areas like Bo-Kaap.
  • Do book tours and transfers: The city is spread out, and guided transport makes exploring easier and safer.

Don’ts

  • Don’t walk alone at night in quiet areas: Stick to well-lit, busy places or use reliable transport.
  • Don’t flash valuables: Like in most cities, it’s best to keep cameras, phones, and jewellery discreet.
  • Don’t hike solo: Table Mountain and Lion’s Head are incredible but always hike with others or on guided tours. Search and Rescue numbers are as follows:                      021 937 0300 / 10177 (medical assistance )
  • Don’t ignore beach safety: Pay attention to lifeguards and flags before swimming—the ocean can be unpredictable.
  • Don’t visit certain neighbourhoods unguided: Areas like some townships are best experienced through trusted, community-led tours.
  • Don't accept help from anybody at a cash machine aka an ATM. Be firm, polite and refuse any help, no matter how "official" they might appear. Cancel the transaction, make sure you take your card and leave.

Following these simple guidelines ensures you’ll experience Cape Town at its best. For more travel tips, check out Cape Town Safety Advice.
